Cam Newton was born Cameron Jerrell Newton on May 11, 1989 in the city of College Park in the state of Georgia. Genetics could have played a part in the outstanding player that Cam is today. Originally a Florida Gator, Cam transferred to Blinn College where his team won a national junior college football championship. While at Blinn College Coach Gene Chizik from Auburn University recruited him to come and play at Auburn.

Newton’s college career was spotted by controversy. While he was a student at Florida he was arrested for theft of a laptop. He was suspended from the team. He completed a court approved pretrial diversion program to have charges dropped against him. However, Foxsports.com reported he left the Gators because he didn’t want to face suspension because of three instances of academic cheating.
At Blinn College Cam excelled. In the fall of 2009 they won the NJCAA National Football Championship. For the following 2010 recruiting season, Newton was ranked the number one quarterback from either a junior college or high school by Rivals.com. As icing on the cake he was the only 5 star quarterback recruit.

Coach Chizik made certain that Newton started the first game at Auburn University which was a victory over Arkansas State. His first game at Auburn he was named SEC player of the week. October 23, Newton played against the LSU Tigers. He rushed for over 200 yards which gave him 1077 for the season. He set the SEC record for most yards rushed by a QB in a season. The record had stood for 40 years owned by Auburn QB Jimmy Sidle. Not only did he break Sidle’s rushing record, he also broke Pat Sullivan’s record for most touchdowns in a single season, which had stood since 1971.
He led Auburn to a victory in the Iron Bowl after being down 24-0. The victory was the largest come from behind in the schools 117 year history. His star was shining brighter than anyone could have hoped or expected given his rocky college career start. A ticket to the NFL was a given.

Newton spent the majority of the second half of his 2010 football season in the middle of a controversy that involved his father seeking substantial sums of money in return for his son playing for a major college team which is in violation of NCAA rules and regulations.
Mississippi State University charged Newton Sr. had approached the University advising his son would play for their school for the scholarship plus more. Cecil Newton later said during an interview with a Dallas radio station that in order for his son to transfer to MSU it would take anywhere from $100,000 to $180,000.
Auburn maintained throughout the investigation that Cam played for his scholarship only during his entire time at the University.
On December 1, 2010 the NCAA announced that Cam was not eligible because of his father’s actions with Mississippi State University for Auburn. Auburn immediately filed to have Cam reinstated. The NCAA reinstated Cam advising that he was not involved in his father’s actions.
Cam Newton Heisman Trophy
The reinstatement from the NCAA declared Cam eligible for the Heisman Trophy. He won the trophy in a landslide of 2263 points that included 729 first place votes.
Since leaving Florida he has had no criminal record. Although the NFL lockout has sidetracked his pro career somewhat, he is looking like a top draft choice for the upcoming season.
